Key Insights from the “Mediterranean Interconnections at 2030 Horizon” Webinar

On 18 November, Med-TSO presented its Master Plan of Mediterranean Interconnections 2025 during the webinar “Mediterranean Interconnections at 2030 Horizon”, an event that brought together experts and system operators from across the region. The session highlighted technical progress, long-term planning perspectives, and the transformative regional benefits expected from new and upgraded cross-border links across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

The Masterplan provides a comprehensive roadmap for the development of the regional electricity network, aiming to support the energy transition and strengthen cross-border integration. During the session, speakers highlighted the benefits of increasing interconnection capacity, enhancing the integration of renewable energy, and building a more resilient and secure infrastructure.

The webinar also outlined the common methodology used to develop the Masterplan, which includes shared regional modelling, cost–benefit analyses, and the identification of network bottlenecks. This coordinated approach enabled the definition of a list of priority interconnection projects, many of them cross-border, considered essential to ensuring a reliable and decarbonised energy system by 2030.

Among the key points discussed, the growing importance of North–South power flows was emphasised, driven by the expansion of renewable generation in the southern Mediterranean and by rising demand in the north. The Masterplan also identifies high renewable potential areas that will require network reinforcements to enable full integration.

Looking ahead, Med-TSO will continue disseminating the Masterplan, coordinating with regulators and policymakers, and preparing for the implementation of the selected projects. The Masterplan 2025 stands as a fundamental tool for building a more sustainable, secure, and interconnected Mediterranean power system.
