Med-TSO Activities in Tunis: a Week of Strategic Meetings and Training

Tunis has been the hub for a series of key Med-TSO activities this week, bringing together experts and decision-makers to drive regional energy cooperation. From specialised training to high-level discussions, the meetings, kindly hosted by our member STEG, have been instrumental in advancing Med-TSO’s objectives for Mediterranean energy planning.

February 25 – Electricity Highway Training

The week started with the first Med-TSO E-Highway Training, organised by the Technical Committee Planning. The session focused on equipping members with essential skills for long-term scenario development within the TEASIMED 2 project.

The morning session focused on defining the data collection methodology and establishing a common glossary to ensure consistency across all Med-TSO activities. This was followed by breakout sessions, where participants reviewed country-specific datasets, discussed follow-up actions, and identified areas for further data collection and analysis. These discussions are crucial for developing accurate and reliable long-term energy scenarios.

In the afternoon session, the focus shifted to the selection of tools and design methodologies that will be used for future projections. The team also worked on refining CO2 emissions forecasting for key sectors, including industry, services, agriculture, households, and transport. This analysis is essential to understand the potential environmental impact of different energy scenarios and plan a sustainable energy transition in the Mediterranean region.

This training is a major step towards improving data analysis and modelling, benefiting both Med-TSO initiatives and national-level studies.

📌Long-Term Energy Planning: the Electricity Highway Approach

“Interconnections and the development of large high-voltage interconnections require many years for planning, authorization, and implementation. Therefore, it is necessary to start planning several years in advance to define the necessary network reinforcements.”
Simone Biondi, TEASIMED 2 Project Manager

February 26 – Executive Board Meeting

The Executive Board convened in the morning to discuss and approve several important topics, including:

  • The review of the TEASIMED 2 project’s progress and approval of the 2024 Annual Report.
  • Updates on financial planning and governance matters, alongside strategic discussions on a new grant proposal to support Med-TSO’s future initiatives.
  • Validation of upcoming events.

February 26-27 – Summer Outlook 2025 Implementation Workshop

The Implementation Workshop brought together Med-TSO experts to assess the energy system’s adequacy for Summer 2025. Key Focus Areas included reviewing and validating collected data, providing updates on software and modelling tools, refining modelling processes, and scenario adjustments.

The model was re-run after the workshop, incorporating all decisions made during the sessions. This refined analysis will contribute to the drafting and approval of the final Summer Outlook 2025 report.

These meetings represent a significant step forward in Med-TSO’s mission to enhance regional cooperation and develop sustainable energy solutions. By fostering knowledge-sharing and technical expertise, Med-TSO continues to support the creation of a more integrated and resilient Mediterranean energy market.

Stay tuned for further updates and outcomes from these initiatives!
