From 19 to 21 May, in Tunis, Med-TSO experts gathered to finalise the kick off phase of the technical activities for TEASIMED 3
Through the collaborative effort of four Med-TSO Technical Committee – Planning, Economic Studies & Scenarios, Regulation & Institutions, Operation – Med-TSO started to work on finalization of the Project Initiation Documents (PID) for Teasimed 3: an essential guiding document in this context, is expected to be finalized by mid-June.
This new project is being carried out considering significant structural changes in the region’s power systems, including the large-scale integration of variable renewable energy sources (RES), the development of storage technologies, increasing electrification, and the reinforcement of regional interconnections.
Key discussion areas for the meetings include:
- Focus on Operation: developing a structured contribution to the PID centered on adequacy and flexibility, the operational impacts of increased renewable penetration and storage deployment, and the interaction with sector coupling and regional interconnections.
- Regulatory & Institutional Focus: aligning the project scope with objectives for enhanced RES integration, system adequacy, flexibility, and the development of harmonized regulatory and institutional frameworks. The discussions aimed for a shared understanding of priorities.
- Long-Term Vision: defining a forward-looking vision for Mediterranean power systems up to 2050, and addressing technical challenges such as coordination with TYNDP scenarios and improving the modeling.
- Planning: focused on establishing the “Rules of Engagement” for the new project phase formalizing the Project Initiation Document (PID), defining objectives for each planning activities foreseen by Teasimed 3 and the way to achieve them
The joint discussions within these committees will contribute to defining the ambitions and scope of TEASIMED 3, ensuring consistency between operational needs, regulatory considerations, and technological developments
These meetings are among the most significant steps forward in Med-TSO’s mission to enhance regional cooperation and to support the creation of a more integrated and resilient Mediterranean energy market.
