Med-TSO Wins Best Paper Award at CIGRE 2026 Paris Session

During the poster session on 27 august 2026 at the Cigre 2026 in Paris, Med-TSO was awarded with the “Certification of recognition Best Paper” for the work titled “Towards an Efficient, Adequate, Sustainable and Interconnected Mediterranean Power System: Résumé of the Master Plan.”

Celebrating the achievement, the Secretary General Angelo Ferrante declared: “Receiving the Best Paper Award from Study Committee C1 at the CIGRE 2026 Paris Session is an extraordinary honour for Med-TSO. This recognition by the global power system community validates our commitment and reflects the tremendous dedication of our experts and the strength of regional cooperation. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the authors and team whose technical excellence made this achievement possible.

The award-winning paper was authored by Charalampos Pitas (IPTO, Greece), Vice-Chairperson of Med-TSO Technical Committee “Operation”, Mario Sisinni (Terna, Italy), Vice President of Med-TSO and Vice-Chairperson of the Technical Committee “Planning”, Emmanuel Bué (RTE, France), former Chairperson of the Med-TSO Technical Committee “Economic Studies and Scenarios”, Ahmed Elshami, Med-TSO Technical Officer, Anas El Hraiech, Med-TSO Teasimed 3 Project Manager, and the Secretary General itself.

The paper provides a comprehensive summary of the 2025 edition of the Masterplan of Mediterranean interconnections. It outlines the region’s transition toward a more sustainable and interconnected power system, driven by increased renewable energy deployment, grid modernization, and stronger regional cooperation. According to the scenario analyses detailed in the paper, the Mediterranean will see significant growth in electricity demand alongside a major shift toward solar and wind generation, which is expected to lead to the near disappearance of highly polluting thermal plants by 2040. Furthermore, the Mediterranean Electricity Interconnection Perspectives (MEIP) assesses 18 cross-border projects that could add approximately 15 GW of transfer capacity. These vital infrastructure projects aim to strengthen system adequacy and security of supply, reduce emissions, improve market integration, and deliver substantial socio-economic benefits across the entire region.

At the same poster session, Med-TSO also presented the paper From Scarcity to Security: The First Adequacy and Flexibility Assessment across MENA Region and Interconnected Operation Challenges”.
