Today Med-TSO held a regional roadshow for the TEASIMED 2 project in Amman, hosted by NEPCO. Held under the central theme, “Connecting Grids, Securing the Future: the TEASIMED2 project effort for an Integrated Mediterranean Power System”, the event moved beyond project results, aiming to galvanize immediate action, investment, and tangible progress toward regional power system integration.
The roadshow served not as a conclusion to the TEASIMED 2 project but as the strategic start of a concerted push toward implementation of regional projects.
The gathering in Amman brought together key regional energy figures and stakeholders, emphasizing the critical importance of coordinated investments, policy alignment, and innovative technologies to build a resilient, sustainable, and interconnected power system across the Mediterranean.
The conference has been opened by Ahmed Aldohni, Assistant Managing Director for Planning and Bulk Supply at National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), who welcomed the participant on behalf of H.E. Saleh Kharabsheh H.E. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), Jordan. H.E. Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, EU Ambassador to Jordan, delivered the keynote speech, highlighting EU support for regional energy integration and ongoing investment in renewable energy, storage, and transmission projects in Jordan.
Angelo Ferrante, Secretary General of Med-TSO, followed with an overview of the role of TEASIMED 2 project in driving the region Towards an Efficient, Adequate, Sustainable, and Interconnected Mediterranean Power System, paving the floor for the first session, “Setting the scene: a shared vision for Regional Energy Integration, underscored the high-level commitment to cross-regional cooperation:
- Omar Abu Eid, Energy, Environment & Climate Change Programme Manager, EU Delegation Jordan, presented a keynote on “The new Pact for the Mediterranean and the Trans-Mediterranean Energy and Clean Tech Cooperation Initiative: A Framework for Euro-Mediterranean Energy Partnership.”
- Rania Rafaat, League of Arab States Energy Department, highlighted “The Role of the LAS in Driving Integration in the eastern Mediterranean and beyond.”
The following session “The Future Grid – Towards an “extended” Mediterranean Region?” focused on practical steps for strengthening interconnections and regional range:
- Emmanuel Bué (RTE, France), Chairperson of Med-TSO Technical Committee Economic Studies & Scenarios, presented Med-TSO’s Vision for 2040: Masterplan Outcomes & System Needs, outlining the strategic trajectory for the regional power system.
- A presentation on the status and perspectives of development of regional interconnections showcased the “extended” Mediterranean region, featuring updates from Khaled Abudaye (Public Establishment of Transmission and Distribution of Electricity, Syria), Hashim Al-Zahrani (Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority), and Theodoros Tsakiris (Director of the International Relations of IPTO, Greece).
A subsequent panel discussion on “Financing the electrical infrastructures” addressed the main challenges and solutions for attracting investment: moderated by Angelo Ferrante, the panel included Mohammad Abdelrahman (Senior Engineering Advisor for the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development), Murad Al Omari (Manager of the generation planning department of NEPCO, Jordan), Hasan Ozkoc (Director of MEDREG, the association of Mediterranean Regulators) and Deniz Coskun
(Deputy General Manager of TEIAŞ, Türkiye).
In the afternoon session, the focus shifted to the technical and regulatory frameworks necessary for implementation. Ahmed El Shami, Med-TSO Power System & Adequacy Studies Advisor, explored the path towards a more adequate and flexible power system, highlighting the technical benefits of integration, while Juan Manuel Rodriguez (Red Eléctrica, Spain), Chairperson of Med-TSO Technical Committee Regulation & Institutions, further illustrated how to harmonize operational protocols across borders, also giving key takeaways on the rules applied to the interconnections between EU and extra-EU countries.
The final panel discussion hinged on passing from plan to action, exploring policy and regulation actions to proceed towards integration, and identifying the next steps for turning strategic plans into reality. Moderated by Hasan Ozkoc, the panel brought together key policymakers, including Rania Rafaat (League of Arab States), Omar Abu Eid (EU Delegation Jordan), Mohammad Maaya (Director of Electricity and Renewable Energy, EMRA, Jordan), and Murad Al Omari (NEPCO, Jordan).
This roadshow successfully showcased achievements, pinpointed remaining challenges, and solidified commitments towards practical implementation, accelerating renewable energy deployment, and enhancing regional cooperation and data sharing.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Simone Biondi, Med-TSO TEASIMED 2 Project Manager, reaffirming the commitment to building a resilient and sustainable interconnected power system across the Mediterranean.
In the frame of its Teasimed 2 project and to boost the dissemination of its results, Med-TSO is organising another roadshow in Marrakesh next 15 January 2026 and the project’s Closing Conference in Brussels next February 2026.
