At Egypt Energy 2024, held from November 26-28, Med-TSO’s Power System Advisor Naglaa Khattab delivered an insightful presentation on the organisation’s role in shaping the Mediterranean energy market. Endorsed by Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the event attracted key stakeholders from North Africa and beyond, serving as a platform for advancing clean and resilient energy systems.
The Mediterranean Master Plan of Interconnections
Ms. Khattab presented the Mediterranean Master Plan of Interconnections, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts in the region’s energy grid development, market integration, and energy security. Med-TSO’s 2022 update of the plan, developed during the TEASIMED project with input from 20 TSOs across 20 countries, outlines 19 interconnection clusters to optimise grid development. The plan’s next update, titled Mediterranean Electricity Interconnections Perspectives, will be released after the conclusion of the ongoing TEASIMED 2 project.
Egypt as an Energy Hub
A key focus of Naglaa’s presentation was Egypt’s growing role as a pivotal energy hub in the Mediterranean. Strategically located at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and Asia, Egypt is emerging as a central player in the Mediterranean energy network. The country’s existing and planned interconnections with neighbouring countries, as well as its involvement in 5 out of the 19 interconnection projects outlined in the Mediterranean Master Plan, demonstrate its importance. Egypt is positioning itself as a link connecting Africa to Europe and Asia through four key energy corridors, supporting regional energy security and facilitating cross-border electricity exchange.
Med-TSO’s efforts are progressively paving the way for a more integrated and secure energy future in the Mediterranean. Through strategic projects and collaborations, the association will assist the region for the challenges of energy transition. As interconnection projects progress, they will enhance energy security and contribute to regional economic growth and sustainability.
