On 10 December, Med-TSO held a dedicated webinar to present the Mediterranean Electricity Interconnection Perspective (MEIP) 2025, offering a long-term outlook of regional interconnections towards the 2040 horizon. The session brought together transmission system operators and experts from across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East to discuss the strategic corridors that will underpin the future Mediterranean power system.
The webinar highlighted how the Mediterranean electricity system is expected to undergo profound changes over the coming decades, driven by rising electricity demand, accelerated electrification, increased renewable penetration, and climate-related challenges. Against this backdrop, regional interconnections were presented as a cornerstone to ensure security of supply, system flexibility, and cost-efficient decarbonisation.
Presentations highlighted the main regional corridors identified within the MEIP, with a strong focus on the Western Mediterranean, Adriatic and Balkan, Central Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, and Middle East corridors. Across these regions, proposed interconnections, many based on HVDC technology, are expected to increase transfer capacity, reduce CO₂ emissions and renewable curtailment, enhance market integration and system flexibility, and strengthen cooperation between Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean, with Morocco and Egypt emphasised as key regional energy hubs.

Across all corridors, speakers underlined that most scenarios show strong utilisation of interconnections and predominantly North–South power flows, reinforcing their strategic role in supporting decarbonisation, renewable integration, and regional cooperation. The MEIP demonstrates that coordinated planning, shared methodologies, and cross-border investment are essential to unlock the full potential of the Mediterranean energy transition.
The webinar concluded by reaffirming Med-TSO’s commitment to promoting long-term regional planning, engaging with institutions and stakeholders, and supporting the development of priority interconnection projects. The MEIP 2025 will be released early January 2026, and it stands as a key reference for building a secure, sustainable, and interconnected Mediterranean power system towards 2040.
